Choosing a Mindset Coach is a significant decision. Because coaching is an unregulated profession in the UK, anyone can call themselves a ‘Mindset Coach’—even if they’ve only watched a few YouTube videos or completed a 2-hour online course!
If you are going to invest your time, money, and mental energy into Mindset Coaching, you need to know you are in safe, professional hands. Here is how to navigate the search and ensure you find a legitimate practitioner…
How do I know if my coach is actually qualified and legitimate?
In a field where ‘certification’ can mean anything, you should look for a coach with the right foundations. When looking for a coach, check for:
Qualification(s) & Accredited Training: Did they study at a recognised institution? Do they have a coaching diploma or equivalent?
Professional Memberships: Are they a member of bodies such as the ‘Association for Coaching’ (AC) and/ or ‘The Association for NLP’ (ANLP)? These organisations enforce strict ethical standards and insurance requirements.
Insurance: Are they professionally insured?
Continuous Professional Development (CPD): Are they staying updated with the latest research in Mindset Coaching?
Qualifications Matter
As mentioned, because coaching remains unregulated in the UK, qualifications are your primary filter for safety. Look for formal training from an accredited institution. In the UK, you should seek practitioners who are members of professional organisations like the ‘Association for Coaching’ (AC) and/ or ‘The Association for NLP’ (ANLP). There are several others to consider but make sure to do your homework on them first.
These organisations enforce strict ethical standards and ensure that their members uphold high professional practices. Some coaches possess additional training in areas like NLP and Psychology. For instance, a coach with a psychology background may be able to understand your specific mindset issues better.
Moreover, ongoing education and supervision are encouraging signs (and a necessary requirement for awarding bodies). It indicates a commitment to improving skills and staying updated on the latest techniques and research. Look for coaches who actively engage in continuous professional development (CPD) and supervision to enhance their knowledge.
Why shouldn’t I just choose the cheapest Mindset Coach?
It’s tempting to shop on price, but in coaching, you usually get what you pay for.
There are various reasons why a coach may be ‘cheap’. It doesn’t mean they’re a bad coach, but these are possible reasons to be aware of:
Experience: Often, a lower price point indicates someone who is just starting their journey.
They may have the theory, but they haven't yet logged the thousands of client hours required to handle complex mindset blocks. When you pay for a specialist, you are paying for the knowledge that comes from years of seeing every type of mindset ‘bug’ imaginable.
The One-Size-Fits-All Approach: High-volume, low-cost coaching often relies on rigid scripts or generic motivational templates. You will pay more for a bespoke strategy around your specific mindset issues.
Lack of Supervision and CPD: Professional insurance, high-level memberships (like the AC or ANLP), and regular supervision are significant overheads. A ‘cheap’ coach may be cutting corners on these professional safeguards to keep their prices low.
The Insight Trap: Have you ever had the feeling of knowing exactly what the issue is, but not having a clue what to do about it? That’s the insight trap!
Many entry-level coaches are great at helping you understand your problem. They can talk about why you feel stuck for hours. However, understanding a problem and actually rewiring it are two different things.
Choosing the cheapest option often leads to you being very self-aware but still having the same habits and beliefs six months later.
Skin in the Game: There is a psychological element to investment. When the price is too low, the commitment level often follows. A premium investment ensures that both the coach and the client are 100% in on your transformation.
When you pay for a specialist, you aren't just paying for their time; you are paying for their expertise that allows them to spot a mindset ‘bug’ in minutes that others might miss for months.
Do I only need one Mindset Coaching session?
I’ll be honest: No.
If a coach tells you they can solve all your mindset issues in a single session, they are overpromising (or they’re a wizard!).
Real, biological change—the kind we discuss in my blogs on Neuroplasticity—requires a process. We need to identify the block, interrupt the old neural loop, and then physically strengthen the new one through integration. That is why I work exclusively in 5-session packages.
One session is a conversation; five sessions is a transformation.
How do I choose the "Right" Mindset Coach?
Beyond qualifications, the most important factor is The Fit. You need to feel that your coach ‘gets’ your world—whether that's the pressure of elite sport, the difficulties of corporate leadership or something else.
The best way to gauge this is through a Free Mindset Strategy Session. During this 20–30-minute video call, you should ask yourself:
Do I feel heard and understood?
Do they explain the "how" and the "why" clearly?
Do I feel that they will challenge me, or are they just telling me what I want to hear?
What is your cancellation policy?
Transparency matters. To protect the integrity of our coaching relationship and to ensure commitment, I require 48 hours' notice for any session rescheduling or cancellation.
Because we are working on a structured timeline to achieve your goals, consistency is key. My policy ensures that we stay on track and that the time is respected by both coach and client.
Summary
When seeking a Mindset Coach, don't just look for a cheerleader (you can find thousands of motivational videos for free on YouTube).
Look for a Specialist – someone that is the right fit for your specific Mindset issues.
Prioritise coaching fit, accreditation & qualifications, and a structured process over quick fixes and low prices.
