What is Mindset Coaching and Is It Right for Me?

Have you ever felt like you’re the one standing in your own way? Maybe you’ve had enough of self-sabotaging your own success? Maybe you feel like you take one step forwards and two steps back again and again?
If so, Mindset Coaching could be a good option for you. But, with so many terms flying around (NLP, CBT, therapy, life coaching etc), it’s easy to feel more confused than when you started.
In this post, I’m going to strip away the jargon and answer the questions you’re actually asking…
What Exactly is Mindset Coaching?
At its core, mindset coaching is a partnership. While a sports coach helps an athlete with the physical aspects of their game, a mindset coach helps you with the internal narrative that dictates your performance.
Working together, we focus on identifying the subconscious beliefs and habits that drive your behaviour. For example, if you believe you aren't a natural leader in the workplace, you won’t subconsciously act like one and will probably fail to get that promotion you’re going for. We change the belief to change the result.
Mindset coaching is powerful for many areas of life, and I work with clients across three primary pillars:
1. Sports Mindset Coaching
This isn't about how many hours you spend in the gym; it’s about what happens between your ears during those crunch moments. We work on performance anxiety, overcoming limiting beliefs (e.g. imposter syndrome) and building the mental resilience needed to bounce back from injury or defeat. Whether you're an amateur or a pro, we’ll ensure your head is in the game as much as your heart is.
2. Life Mindset Coaching
If you feel like you’re drifting or constantly hitting a glass ceiling in your personal happiness, life coaching provides the blueprint. We tackle limiting beliefs, procrastination, and the imposter syndrome that keeps you playing small. This is about taking control of your personal narrative so you can stop reacting to life and start designing it.
3. Corporate Mindset Coaching
In the high-stakes world of business, your mindset is your greatest asset (or your biggest liability). I help leaders and teams navigate high-pressure decision making, effective communication, and burnout prevention. We focus on shifting from a fixed mindset—where mistakes are failures—to a growth mindset, where every challenge is an opportunity to scale.
How is Mindset Coaching Different from Therapy?
This is one of the most common questions I get, and it’s an important one.
Therapy (CBT, Counselling): Typically focuses on the past. It is designed to heal trauma, manage clinical mental health conditions, and understand why you feel the way you do. This isn’t the case with every type of therapy, but it is with the vast majority.
Mindset Coaching: Focuses on the future. We acknowledge the past, but our primary goal is optimisation. We look at where you are now and build a bridge to where you want to be.
IMPORTANT: If you are currently dealing with acute clinical depression, severe depression or unaddressed deep-seated trauma, therapy is the right first step. Coaching works best when you are ready to take action towards a goal.
What is NLP and Why Use It?
You’ll often see Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) mentioned alongside mindset coaching. Think of NLP as the "software manual" for your brain.
Neuro: Your neurological system (how you see, hear, and feel).
Linguistic: The language you use with yourself and others.
Programming: The habits and patterns you’ve "downloaded" over a lifetime.
We use NLP techniques to "re-code" reactions. For example, if public speaking triggers a fight or flight response, NLP helps us uncouple that fear from the activity, replacing it with a sense of calm or focus.
NLP is very powerful in helping us to change beliefs that we may have held for a long time and get us looking forward in a positive, solution-focused way.
Is Mindset Coaching Safe?
Yes. Mindset coaching is a non-invasive, conversational process. However, it is intellectually and emotionally rigorous. You will be challenged to look at your excuses and biases.
The risk in mindset coaching isn't physical; it’s the discomfort of growth. You are essentially shedding an old version of yourself to make room for a new one.
You should come into mindset coaching with an open mind, ready to challenge yourself in a positive way. It isn’t always easy, but growth never is.
Is Mindset Coaching Scary?
It can feel intimidating because it requires radical honesty.
Many people find it scary to realise they’ve been the one holding themselves back for years. But on the other side of that fear is incredible freedom. Most clients describe the feeling after a breakthrough session not as scary, but as a massive weight being lifted off their shoulders.
Is Mindset Coaching for Me?
Mindset coaching is for you if:
