Mindset Coaching is a powerful process and there are many clear upsides… for example, more confidence, better performance, clearer decision-making under pressure, and many more.

BUT (!) it is not often easy and will, in fact, often be very challenging.

We will be creating a new way of doing things. That involves changing things up, and there are often ‘side effects’… it’s important that you are aware of these potential ‘downsides’, so we’re going to look at them now. Here are some of the most common:

1. Cognitive Fatigue

One of the most common side effects is feeling mentally and physically exhausted after a session.

The Science: Your brain uses about 20% of your body’s total energy. When we use powerful NLP and coaching techniques to interrupt old thinking loops and build new ones, your brain is working at maximum capacity. It is the mental equivalent of a heavy leg day at the gym! You might find you need an extra hour of sleep or some quiet time to reflect after our sessions.

2. Emotional Friction

Before we can build a new high-performance mindset, we often have to dismantle the old one. This can feel uncomfortable.

The Reality: If you’ve spent 10 years using perfectionism or anxiety as your primary fuel for success, losing those ‘bugs’ can feel strange at first. You might feel a bit flat or uncertain for a little while as your system adjusts to a new, calmer way of operating. This isn't a setback; it’s a sign that the old software is being successfully uninstalled.

An analogy that I like is that our mindset can be like one of those snow globes that sit on your desk. All the snow is settled at the bottom as you’re used to doing things the way you are. But you know you need to change. The only way to change is by shaking that snow globe. This can create a feeling of temporary unsteadiness as the snow settles in a different position. But working through that unsteadiness leads to the progress you are seeking.

3. Changes in Your Social Circle

This is a side effect people rarely talk about.

As your mindset shifts, your tolerance for low-performance environments often drops.

  • You might find you no longer enjoy venting sessions with friends.

  • You might start setting firmer boundaries at work or in your personal life.

  • You might find that people who liked the old, anxious you feel uncomfortable with the new, decisive you.

What are the potential downsides of Mindset Coaching?

OK, so we’ve looked at the ‘side effects' of Mindset Coaching. The things that might come up for you once you’ve got started in the process.

Now, we’re going to look at the potential downsides of ‘bad’ or ‘misaligned’ coaching.

  • The Surface-Level Trap: If you work with a coach who doesn't understand the deep end of behaviour, you might get a temporary motivational high that crashes a week later. This can lead to a cycle of self-help addiction where you are constantly chasing the next hit of inspiration without ever fixing the root cause.

  • Over-Analysis Paralysis: It’s great to begin to understand yourself on a deeper level, but some coaching can make you too self-aware, leading you to overthink every move you make. We avoid this by focusing on Execution. Our goal is to get you out of your head and back into your Flow State.

  • Financial and Time Commitment: The biggest ‘downside’ is the investment in time and money. If you aren't 100% committed to the sessions, you risk wasting time and money in the process.

If you don’t feel fully committed, it is not worth taking the step into mindset coaching – the reality is that you won’t get the results you’re after because you aren’t fully invested.

This is why the Strategy Session is vital – we ensure that this is the right move for you before you make any time or money investment.

Summary

Are there side effects to Mindset Coaching?

Yes. Change is a physical process that requires energy, patience, and a willingness to feel ‘new’ or ‘different’ for a while.

However, these side effects are simply the growing pains of a high-performance identity…

they are the evidence that the growth is happening.
