Mindset Coach v Sports Psychologist: Which do I need?
Confused between a Mindset Coach and a Sports Psychologist? While the lines are often blurred, the approach is very different. Discover when you need a clinical, academic perspective versus a practical 'Performance Engineering' approach—and why your brain doesn't care whether you're on the golf course or in the boardroom.

If you’re a high-performer—whether you’re an elite athlete, a business leader, or a professional aiming for the top—you know that the biggest obstacle to your success isn't your technical skill. It’s what’s happening in your brain.
But when you go to look for help, you’ll find two very different paths: Sports Psychology and Mindset Coaching.
Today, I’m going to be totally honest about the differences between the two, when one is a better option than the other, and why the labels might actually be misleading you.
What is a Sports Psychologist?
A Sports Psychologist typically comes from a clinical and academic background. They have gone through years of regulated training focused on the science of human behaviour in a sporting context.
When is a Sports Psychologist a better option for you?
If you have an underlying clinical issue:
If your performance anxiety is actually a symptom of a deeper clinical anxiety disorder or depression, a registered Psychologist is the right choice.
If you want an academic approach:
If you want a deep dive into data, long-term observation, and evidence-based clinical studies.
If you are part of a massive team infrastructure:
Many pro teams have a resident psychologist focused on the health of the squad.
What is a Mindset Performance Coach?
Mindset Coaching—at least the way I practice it—is less about 'therapy' and more about Performance Engineering.
While I hold a degree in Psychology, I chose the coaching path because it allows for more speed, flexibility, and practical tools like NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). Because I am not bound by clinical constraints, I can use a 'Whatever Works' approach—combining the best of neuroscience, NLP, and performance psychology to get you to the finish line faster.
When is Mindset Coaching a better option for you?
If you want results now:
Coaching is above-baseline work. We aren't looking for what’s 'broken'; we are looking for the 'Mental Handbrake' that is stopping you from winning today.
If your life doesn't fit in a box:
This is the big one. If you are a business owner who also plays golf, or a leader who struggles with pressure in both the boardroom and at home, Mindset Coaching treats you as one complete System, rather than them being separate issues.
If you want a toolbox, not just a talk:
We focus on practical triggers, breathing resets, and identity shifts that you can use in the heat of the moment.
The Secret (It’s Not Just for Sports)
Here is the truth that many people miss: Your brain doesn't have a 'Sports Mode' and a 'Work Mode'!
The 'bug' in your subconscious software that makes you overthink a match-winning kick is the exact same bug that makes you hesitate during a high-stakes business negotiation.
I call this the Lead Domino.
If we fix the way you handle pressure, that fix doesn't stay on the golf course. It follows you into your office, your meetings, and your relationships. Choosing 'Mindset Coaching' over a traditional 'Sports Psychologist' often means you are looking for a transformation that covers your whole life, not just your scorecard.
Mindset Coach v Sports Psychologist: The Comparison Summary
To help you decide, let’s look at the The Big Three differences:
Still unsure which one you need?
The reality is that both have their place. If you need clinical support, go to a Psychologist.
But, if you have the technical skill and you’re just 'getting in your own way,' you likely need a Mindset Coach to help you release that handbrake.
If you’re still not sure which you need, I offer a Free 30-minute Mindset Strategy Session. We’ll look at your specific challenges—whether they are on the field or in the boardroom—and I will be 100% honest if I think a different professional would be a better fit for you.
