One of the most frequent questions I get asked is: "Is mindset coaching just therapy under a different name?"

The answer is No.

While Mindset Coaching and Therapy (like CBT and Counselling) use some similar psychological tools, they have completely different destinations. While there is naturally some crossover between the two, I find the most helpful way to distinguish them is through the Baseline Analogy.

The Baseline Analogy

  • Therapy (CBT/ Counselling): Is generally designed to bring a person from Below Baseline (e.g. struggling with high anxiety or depression) back up to Baseline (functioning effectively in daily life). It often focuses on ‘Why’ things happened in the past.

  • Mindset Coaching: Is designed to take someone from Baseline (already functioning well) to High Performance (mastering their craft, leading teams, or winning matches). We focus on the ‘How’ - how to move forward and bridge the gap between where you are and where you want to be.

Can I have Mindset Coaching if I’m anxious, stressed, or depressed?

This is a nuanced area, so there is not a clear yes-or-no answer.

If you are experiencing clinical depression or severe anxiety that makes daily functioning difficult, Therapy is your first port of call. Coaching is a high-energy, change-oriented process that requires a certain level of mental fuel. If your tank is empty, coaching can feel overwhelming.

However, if you feel anxious because you are a high-achiever under immense pressure or stressed because you are transitioning into a leadership role - that is exactly what Mindset Coaching is for. We aren't treating a disorder; we are optimising a performance state.

You are the best judge of your own current capacity, but if you are unsure, we can figure that out together during a strategy call. If I don't think you're in the right place for coaching yet, I'll be honest with you.

Individual Sessions vs. Group Coaching: Pros and Cons

As you look for the right fit, you’ll notice many coaches offer group programmes. These can be a great way of getting the results you need with a lower money investment. But just like everything, there are pros and cons to be aware of.

Here is how they compare to individual sessions:

The Verdict: Group coaching is great for general personal development. But if you are in the middle of a career transition or a sports season and need a targeted fix for a specific block, Individual sessions are the gold standard.

Summary

Therapy looks back to heal; Mindset Coaching looks forward to perform.

If you are ready to stop analysing your past and start engineering your future, you are in the right place.
