How Can I Tell if Mindset Coaching is Right for Me?

Not everyone is ready for mindset coaching. This guide breaks down the three requirements for success, the "downsides" of the process, and why "Secondary Gain" might be the hidden reason you feel resistant to change.

Mindset coaching is a powerful tool for transformation, but it isn’t a magic pill that works for everyone in every situation. I want to ensure that if you choose to work with me, it’s because this approach is genuinely the best fit for your goals.

To help you decide, I’m going to be completely transparent about who this is for, who it isn't for, and the potential downsides of the process.

Who is a Good Candidate for Mindset Coaching?

Mindset coaching is for anyone who is tired of playing it small. While I often work with athletes, business owners, and professionals, this isn’t about your job title—it’s about your desire to move forward.

You don’t need to be at the top of your game to start; in fact, most of my clients come to me because they feel they are underperforming compared to what they know they are capable of.

You are a good candidate for Mindset Coaching if:

  • You have a clear goal: You know where you want to go, but something internal (fear, doubt, procrastination) is stopping you.

  • You are ready to make an investment in your growth: You understand that change requires an investment of time, money, and mental effort.

  • You are coachable: You are willing to look at your own blind spots and try new techniques, even if they feel different or unusual at first.

When Mindset Coaching Might Not Be Right for You

There are times when coaching—no matter how good the coach—is not the right solution. You should probably look for an alternative if:

  • You are looking for someone to fix you without doing any work yourself: If you want someone to do the work for you while you remain passive, coaching will fail. It would be a waste of your time and money.

  • You are in a mental health crisis: Coaching is future-focused and performance-based. It is not a substitute for clinical psychiatric care or crisis intervention.

  • You’re not ready to put in the effort: If you aren't ready to commit to a 5-session process, you won't see the results that you desire. It’s fine to be unsure, but if so, I recommend taking your time, doing your research (e.g. read some more of my blogs for information) and making sure you’re ready to get started. Then, when you are, sign up for my Free Mindset Strategy Session.

What are the problems, issues, or downsides of Mindset Coaching?

It can be rare for a coach to talk about the downsides, but they do exist. To be successful, you need to be aware of them:

  1. It can be uncomfortable: To rewire old habits and behaviours we have to challenge old, sometimes comfortable beliefs (often keeping up safe, but stuck). This can feel emotionally taxing in the short term.

  1. It requires time outside of sessions: If you don't do the mindset homework or make the changes we put in place, you won’t embed into your life the work we did within our sessions.

  1. It isn't a ‘Quick Fix’: While we will use powerful coaching and NLP techniques, permanent change still requires the integration phase of our 5-session model.

What if I can’t be coached?

People often ask, "What if Mindset Coaching doesn’t work for me?"

The truth is that everyone with a brain is capable of positive change!

However, some people are resistant to coaching.

For example, this person might be aware of the resistance and is consciously choosing to stay within their comfort zone.

But usually, it happens because of a subconscious 'secondary gain’ (the benefit of staying the same) is stronger than the desire to change. This secondary gain is not always obvious at first but will often come to the surface over time.

My job is to help you identify that resistance and clear it. If you are willing to be honest, put in the effort and make the changes, you can be coached.

What if Mindset Coaching doesn't work for me?

If we reach the end of our 5 sessions and you feel no shift, it usually comes down to one of two things: either the radical honesty wasn't there, or the active participation (e.g. mindset homework) wasn't completed. This is why I offer the Free Mindset Strategy Session. That session is an opportunity for us both to see if we are the right coaching match. If I don't think we can get the result, I won't take your money. I only take on clients I am confident I can help.
